15-year-old arrested in Deltona stabbing; mother also charged - Authorities

A 15-year-old boy and his mother have been taken into custody following a stabbing incident that occurred near Heritage Middle School in Deltona.

A 15-year-old boy is reported to have been involved in a school-related incident that turned violent, as stated by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities report that Kayla Cobb, 33, attempted to protect her son by providing a misleading alibi, a decision that resulted in her being taken into custody for hindering a criminal enquiry.

The circumstances surrounding the altercation and the intentions behind the stabbing are still uncertain. The details surrounding the video evidence and the role of the cell phone in the inconsistencies of their alibi remain largely undisclosed to the public. Authorities have yet to reveal if the teenager will be charged as a juvenile or as an adult.

A recent stabbing incident is said to have originated from a conflict at school. The mother of the teenager was taken into custody initially, reportedly for attempting to create a false narrative for the authorities. Deputies found that the video evidence did not support her account of what happened. The teenager was ultimately reported by his grandmother once authorities initiated their search for him.

The sheriff’s office highlighted how video and cell phone data were crucial in dismantling a fabricated alibi. Authorities observed inconsistencies between the accounts provided by the teenager and his mother and the evidence captured in the video.

“His cellphone gave him up,” said Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood. “So he’s got a warrant out for aggravated battery. Mom’s being arrested as well. She’s going to be my nominee for ‘Mother of the Year’. Your son’s out there stabbing people, and you’re creating an alibi to have him not be accountable. Well now, we’re going to hold you accountable.”

The department acknowledged the grandmother’s cooperation during the arrest.
