According to authorities on Thursday, a teenager is charged with vehicular murder in relation to a Valentine’s Day collision in Pembroke Pines that claimed a woman’s life.
Just after 6:30 p.m. on February 14, Albert Oswaldo Yanez Quintana, 17, of Sunrise, T-boned another vehicle in his Dodge Charger on Dykes Road close to Northwest 12th Street while he was “showing his friends how fast his new car was,” according to Pembroke Pines police.
An arrest report states that the Charger split the Ford Fusion in two as two seniors were attempting to turn left.
Patricia Fajardro De Cardona, one of them, was killed after being ejected in the collision.
According to the investigation, Yanez Quintana was in the Dodge with three of his companions when the collision occurred.
According to the complaint, one of them told authorities Yanez Quintana “should be ‘locked up'” since he “does not know how to drive.”
The companion informed detectives that he was traveling at “70 to 80 mph,” which is far faster than the 45 mph speed limit on Dykes Road, according to the police.
According to the report, investigators concluded that the collision “would not have occurred” if Yanez Quintana had been driving the speed limit, giving the victims almost three additional seconds to cross the crossing.
Yanez Quintana is charged with careless driving in addition to vehicular murder.
