Following the discovery of $1 million in drugs during a recent drug bust in Kent County, officials stated they had detected a worrying trend.
The Kent County Sheriff’s Office’s Kent Area Narcotics Enforcement Team recently seized 11 pounds of cocaine, 1.7 pounds of fentanyl, and a loaded firearm during a drug bust on Grand Rapids’ southwest side.
“This was 1.7 pounds, a very disturbing amount of fentanyl that we found,” said Kent County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Sgt. Scott Dietrich.
Dietrich claimed that the amount of fentanyl discovered might have killed thousands of people.
“Doing the numbers, we found that it was somewhere in the range of, I think, 380,000 people, is what it could possibly kill, just given by the DEA dosage for lethal dosage,” according to Dietrich.
However, that is not the only worry. He said inspectors found the fentanyl wrapped in a method that can better disguise the narcotic.
“Something that we’re seeing in the drug world is that it’s being pressed into pills. And these pills are disguised as anything,” said Dietrich.
He claims that this could harm or kill those who don’t realise what they’re ingesting.
“Whether they got a pill from the same person, the dosage of fentanyl in it is not going to be the same. They could be putting different dosages. They could be mixing it with different mixing agents. You’re never going to get the same type of pill, the same dosage,” said Dietrich.
He stated that, while overdoses have decreased due to the availability of Narcan, the potential of a fatal overdose still exists.
That is why he and others continue to encourage people to stay safe and seek help if they are struggling with a substance use disorder.
