22-year-old arrested after leading NH troopers on 140 mph chase

After being allegedly spotted speeding at 140 miles per hour during the Memorial Day vacation, the driver of a 2024 Chevrolet Corvette is being charged with several offences.

The driver rushed through traffic and refused to stop for troopers on the ground, according to New Hampshire State Police. It was only with the assistance of a police plane that the offender was apprehended.

On Monday, the New Hampshire State Police were carrying out a traffic enforcement campaign related to the holiday weekend, per a news statement posted on their Facebook page. Troops were using a fixed-wing aircraft to patrol Interstate 93 in Salem as part of the initiative. Authorities said a white C8 Corvette was seen driving at 110 mph at around 7:45 a.m.; troopers on the ground allegedly attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver accelerated and fled.

According to the police, Trooper Thomas Lombardi traced the Corvette from the air and led the ground-based officers to the vehicle’s location. Authorities have identified the driver as 22-year-old Brandon E. Babcock of Salem, Massachusetts, who was taken into custody.

He is charged with dangerous driving and defying an officer, the former of which carries a minimum punishment of $620 and a 60-day licence suspension.

However, according to New Hampshire State Police, Babcock wasn’t the only person travelling quickly in the Granite State that weekend. According to the press statement, 42 drivers were seen above 90 mph during the special traffic enforcement campaign, while six drivers were recorded exceeding 100 mph. For the record, New Hampshire has the highest speed limit in the state at 70 mph.

Five Corvette drivers were given speeding tickets in California during a similar holiday weekend traffic enforcement campaign, making this New Hampshire event not the only noteworthy instance of Corvette drivers reportedly trying to behave themselves on the highways over the Memorial Day holiday.
