3 men caught stealing seized gambling machines from ‘Joker’s Bingo,’ Brighton police say

Police claim they have arrested three guys for allegedly taking illicit bingo machines that state authorities had already confiscated.

During his predawn patrol on Thursday, Brighton police Capt. Kenneth Hooten spotted a big Metro rental truck outside Joker’s Bingo Hall in the 5000 block of Bessemer Super Highway.

Hooten, the city’s assistant fired chief, paused to look into the matter.

In the rear of the vehicle, he discovered three men holding bingo machines.

According to Hooten, the Attorney General’s Office had confiscated the devices. They were already outside and shutting down the rear of the truck when I got them.

Last year, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall closed ten unlawful gaming establishments in Jefferson County, including those in Brighton, Midfield, Lipscomb, Bessemer, and rural areas.

The AG’s Office closed four establishments in Brighton, including Joker’s Bingo on Bessemer Super Highway, and almost a dozen more in June. The state confiscated the machines, but they were still in the establishments.

Rashad Ahmad Brown, 44, of Brighton, and Ke Marlin Dewayne Black, 22, of Midfield, are accused with third-degree burglary and first-degree theft of property.

On Friday afternoon, both were taken to the Jefferson County Jail. Each bond is valued at $45,000.

Derick Lavert Crenshaw, a third suspect, has also been charged but has not yet been arrested.

What the suspects intended to do with the devices is still being investigated, according to Hooten.
