33-year-old nearly runs over Officer during Wild pursuit through Yarmouth, Freeport, Portland; Arrested

Police say a 33-year-old from Portland led them on a chase from Yarmouth to Portland in a stolen car Thursday afternoon. The person is now facing multiple charges.

According to the Yarmouth Police, the stolen car was first seen going north on Route 1 around 1:30 p.m. Deserai Collins, the driver, took a one-way off-ramp in the wrong direction when they tried to pull it over. The officer moved back and kept a safe space between the car and northbound Interstate 295.

Police say Collins got off the highway at Yarmouth’s Exit 17, where they hit a police car and almost hit a police officer. Collins ran off again, which led to a chase through Freeport and into Portland. The car got off at Exit 8 and hit another police car on Fore Street.

The chase finished on some nearby railroad tracks, where the driver was caught. Two Yarmouth police officers were slightly hurt during the arrest. One was taken to the hospital and treated, but did not need to be treated. Both ships were damaged, but they could still do their jobs.

As a safety measure, Collins was taken to the hospital. He was then put into the Cumberland County Jail. They are being charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, refusing to be arrested or detained, running a motor vehicle after being suspended, and using someone else’s property without permission. There may be more claims brought.

The police say the probe is still going on. Help was given by police departments from Freeport, Falmouth, and Portland, as well as the Maine State Police and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
