37-year-old cyclist killed in Houston; driver fled after crash leaving victim with husband

A woman was murdered while riding her bicycle in southwest Houston when she was struck by an automobile. The driver of the vehicle involved fled the scene without pausing to assist.

Ashley Mae Nelson, 37, was riding her bicycle across State Highway 6 South at the intersection with Empanada Drive on Sunday, April 13, 2025, around 4:29 a.m. She was driving from east to west when the tragedy happened.

Ashley’s husband, Wesley Adam Johnson, 33, rode closely behind her.

At the same time, an unknown red Ford or Toyota automobile was driving north on State Highway 6 South’s number one lane.

Nelson failed to surrender the right of way to the automobile while crossing both lanes of traffic outside of a crosswalk, and the vehicle struck her.

The driver of the red vehicle fled the area without pausing to provide assistance. Nelson was later confirmed dead at 4:38 a.m. from injuries received in the crash.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office’s Vehicular Crimes Division continues to investigate the matter.
