According to Governor Kathy Hochul, around 8.2 million households in New York State will get inflation refund checks up to $400.
Between October and November, payments will be sent out via postal service. To get the check, recipients don’t have to do anything.
Hochul pushed this scheme, which is included in the State Budget for Fiscal Year 2026. The goal of the effort is to lessen the impact of the growing expense of living.
According to officials, millions of residents who haven’t registered yet will be impacted by this measure.
Verified stimulus payments: Who is eligible to receive the $400 checks?
Those who fulfill the standards set by the New York State Department of Taxation will get the money directly. As long as the specified income and tax levels are fulfilled, there are no age restrictions on receiving the payment.
8.2 million checks in total will be dispersed over several regions. With 3.53 million families, the greatest number of beneficiaries is concentrated in New York City. Long Island, with 1.25 million, and Mid-Hudson, with 924,000, come next.
Western New York (585,000), Finger Lakes (513,000), Capital Region (475,000), Downtown New York (321,000), Southern Tier (251,000), Mohawk Valley (198,000), and Northern Country (156,000) are among the other regions that will be compensated.
Geographical locations or particular postal codes have no bearing on the delivery schedule. Depending on administrative procedure, delivery may differ across neighboring residences.
Who can receive payment?
Those who filed Form IT-201 in the 2023 tax year, did not list dependents, and fall under the specified income ranges are eligible taxpayers.
The amount varies according to the income and marital status of the taxpayer. $400 will be given to couples earning up to $150,000. The check will be for $300 if the income falls between $150,001 and $300,000.
Single taxpayers who report incomes between $75,001 and $150,000 will receive $150, while those with incomes up to $75,000 would receive $200.
Additional tax advantages for families in New York
The state government also authorized further actions in tandem with this program. These include ensuring universal free school lunches, increasing the New York Child Tax Credit to $1,000 per child, and lowering taxes for the middle class.

After discussions with the Legislative Assembly and the Senate’s Democratic majority, these items were included in the budget. They aim to lessen the financial burden on families with low and moderate incomes.
“It’s simple: this is your money, and we’re putting it back in your pockets,” the governor said, adding that nearly 8 million New Yorkers will receive an inflation rebate beginning in October. She also stated that she will keep working on related projects.
