67-year-old man killed in crash at notorious Geauga County intersection

At a crossroads in Geauga County that has been the scene of “multiple injury accidents,” according to local officials, a man lost his life in a crash on Wednesday morning.

According to Lt. Timothy Grimm of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the collision between a dump truck and a Hyundai Elantra occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Chardon-Windsor Road and state Route 608.

After an investigation, the patrol discovered that the Elantra’s driver had been struck by the truck after failing to stop at the stop sign. The two cars veered off the road and into a ditch.

According to OSHP, the truck driver was pronounced dead at the site. Jeff Hazen of Chardon, age 67, was identified as the driver.

Grimm said the Elantra’s driver, a 66-year-old lady from Rome, Ohio, was hurt and sent to a hospital in Geauga County. For more care, she might have to be transferred to a hospital in Cleveland.

Authorities stated they don’t think fog caused the crash.

“We just have to remind motorists to pay attention to traffic signs, check both directions and make sure intersections are clear before they proceed,” Grimm told FOX 8 News.

According to the Chardon Fire Department, the Ohio Department of Transportation, the Geauga County Engineer’s Office, and the trustees of Claridon Township are collaborating on a plan for the intersection’s modifications. There is an investigation going on.
