Mother Gave Scalding Bath to 8-Month-Old Over Soiled Diaper, Leading to Death: Police

After allegedly becoming irate because her 8-month-old child had soiled his nappy, the mother in Texas is suspected of killing him by submerging him in a bath of boiling water, leaving him with burns and other injuries that ultimately led to his death, according to the police.

According to the Hooks Police Department, Jatoria Cleamons, 21, a former Texarkana resident, is charged with manslaughter and damage to a child in relation to the death of her son, Courtlyn Cleamons, on February 4. On Saturday, police declared their intention to arrest her.

“If anyone sees Cleamons or knows of her whereabouts, please call 911 and advise law enforcement,” according to a press release.

That day, Bowie County Sheriff’s Office officers and deputies went to a medic assist call at a residence at 100 Kennedy Circle in Hooks. When they arrived, they discovered emergency responders administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Courtlyn.

Allegedly, Cleamons was lodging with a family member.

Courtlyn’s cause of death was reported as thermal injuries (scalding) after Justice of the Peace Jay Wommack ordered that his body be transferred to the Southwest Institute of Forensics for an autopsy.

Detectives from the Texarkana, Texas, Police Department and Hooks Police collaborated to investigate and question Cleamons as part of a homicide investigation.

She allegedly acknowledged that, about two weeks prior to her son’s death, she had given him an excessively hot bath while residing in a Texarkana home. She said that the accident was the reason she was angry with him.

“Though his time on earth was brief, Courtlyn brought immense joy, love, and light to those who knew him,” according to an online obituary. “His sweet presence will forever be cherished in the hearts of his family.”

Following the incident, Cleamons allegedly wrote multiple messages on Facebook regarding her son’s passing. She captioned a Facebook Reel with images of Courtlyn, saying, “Rest in love, my baby.”

“I love you so much and I miss you so much my heart is so broken,” Cleamons stated. “I will always think about you. Rest in Heaven my love.”

Cleamons remained at large on Sunday afternoon despite the issuance of arrest warrants on Friday.
