One of my greatest joys in life is pressing play on my Audio-Technica record player and letting a soundscape completely overwhelm me.
Whether it’s the hardcore sound of Turnstile, the contemplative jazz of John Coltrane or the croon of Otis Redding, my ever-expanding vinyl collection represents a diverse music taste that I’ve developed over the years.
Going to Seasick Records in downtown Birmingham remains one of my great joys. The staff is incredible, the prices are fair and the selection of records is wide-ranging and high-quality.
Since beginning work in Shelby County, I have noticed that from Alabaster to Wilton, there is no record store to be found. In order to enjoy their next favorite record on vinyl, Shelby County residents will have to make the long trek to downtown Birmingham to Seasick Records.
While this isn’t a pain for me as a Jefferson County resident, I can’t help but feel for those in Calera or Pelham who have to take a long commute to live the record store experience. Even worse, I imagine many order their records online.
I believe Shelby County would benefit from having a record store in one of its cities. Music is something that everyone enjoys, and having a space to celebrate that in Shelby County would be a worthy investment.
But, why just stop at a record store? One of Birmingham’s greatest traits is its diversity in businesses. I’ve never come across the feeling of wishing that Birmingham had a certain store or restaurant, because whether it’s a dynamite Mediterranean restaurant like Falafel Café or an arcade bar like Paramount, the Magic City has it all.
I’m not asking Shelby County to copy Birmingham in every way. I have absolutely loved covering places like Pelham and Montevallo, who have both a unique feel and plenty of inimitable spaces.
However, an increase in business diversity, whether that’s a new boutique coffee shop or a vinyl record store, would only add to the distinct charm of Shelby County. If the county continues to invest in unique spaces, maybe trips to Birmingham will become less and less frequent.
