CALERAAs citizens get ready to cast their ballots, the Calera Municipal Election field has been finalized as the candidate registration time has ended.

The city’s at-large method of choosing City Council members always makes for a contested contest, and the mayoral race is crowded.

There are five contenders for the position of mayor, including incumbent Jon Graham, who is seeking a fifth term. Five of the six incumbents are running for reelection, and there are ten candidates in the City Council pool.

Residents of Calera will choose one of the ten candidates on the list while casting their votes for City Council. Calera’s Council members will be the top six vote-getters.

Among the contenders for City Council are:

  • Drew Bradshaw
  • Chris Bunn
  • Debbie Byers, an incumbent who has been on the council since being appointed fill a vacancy on June 6, 2023.
  • Henry Davis
  • Ernest Montgomery, an incumbent who is currently serving his third term on the council.
  • Calvin Jack Morgan, an incumbent who is currently serving his first term on the council.
  • David Morgan
  • Kay Snowden Turner, an incumbent who is currently serving her second term on the council.
  • Krispin Watson
  • Alan Watts, an incumbent who is currently serving his third term on the council.

Since current council member Kenny Dale Cost has focused on the mayoral election, Calera will undoubtedly have at least one new member when the next term starts.

Derrick Hidalgo, Jennifer Flournoy, Heather Edwards, and Cost will all run against Graham for the position of mayor.

Graham is concentrating on efficiently overseeing Calera’s development as he runs for reelection once more.

In a statement on Calera’s official website, Graham stated that the city council has adopted a progressive stance in recent years in order to get our community ready for expansion. Calera’s city services are among the best in the state thanks to constant improvements and expansions made to our police and fire departments, as well as our water, sewer, and natural gas systems.

Voting in the municipal election is open to Calera residents on August 26 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Calera Public Library will be the location of the vote.
