NYPD Officers Suspended After Allegedly Abandoning Car Chase Before Deadly Fiery Crash

NEW YORK – Two NYPD officers have been fired because they are accused of running away from the scene of a fiery car accident while they were chasing a stolen car.

Reports say that the police followed the suspect down the Henry Hudson Parkway before the car crashed.

This is what we know: Police say the suspect was driving a stolen Honda CR-V around 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday before hitting a building near Inwood Hill Park.

The car that was stolen then caught fire right away.

Officials say the two officers ran away from the scene of the crime, went back to work, and ended their shifts without telling anyone what happened.

Police are accused of leaving the scene of the crime and leaving the man to die alone.

Surveillance film seems to show the police officer leaving the scene of the accident.

We don’t know because police say the driver died at the scene. The person’s name has not been made public yet.

The exact reason why the driver died is still being looked into.

Why it’s important:
This happened after the NYPD put a stop to dangerous police pursuits by telling officers they can’t chase cars that are fleeing from regular traffic stops.

The new rules are meant to address complaints that the department is involved in risky activities that cause accidents and hurt other drivers and walkers.
