Following a collision allegedly caused by a driver who blew a red light, a newborn delivered early via emergency surgery died in a terrible tragedy in Bloomfield Township on Saturday.
According to authorities, the incident happened at approximately 1:30 p.m. next to the IHOP restaurant on Telegraph Road, which is located just north of Square Lake Road.
A Honda Accord and a Jeep Grand Cherokee were involved in the collision, according to the results of Bloomfield Township police’s preliminary investigation.
The northbound Jeep slammed the Honda on the side as it was trying to turn at the Telegraph median crossover.
Police were informed by several witnesses that the Jeep’s driver had run a red light at the intersection before crashing into the Honda.
A woman who was 23 weeks pregnant was among the occupants of the Honda Accord when the collision occurred.
When emergency personnel swiftly arrived, they freed the woman from the car and hurried her to a nearby hospital.
Later the same day, emergency surgery was done to deliver her baby early due to the severity of her injuries and the stress caused by the hit.
The baby did not make it through the medical staff’s efforts. One day after the crash, on Sunday, the infant passed away.
Additionally, both of the drivers who were involved in the crash were taken to the hospital for medical attention. According to authorities, a small child inside the Honda who was securely buckled up in a car seat only suffered minor injuries.

This incident is the most recent in a concerning trend of red-light infractions in the area, which police say is becoming more and more of a problem as a result of distracted driving and increased traffic.
The local community is in shock over the infant’s death, and many are demanding more safety precautions at busy junctions like the one where this tragedy happened.
The mother and child’s family is left to grieve a terrible loss — a life that ended before it had a chance to start — while the inquiry is ongoing.
