PELHAMAt a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, July 28, the Pelham Board of Education approved a number of motions to implement the recently passed FOCUS Act and prepare for the upcoming school year.
On Wednesday, May 14, Governor Kay Ivey signed the FOCUS Act into law, which forbids the use of cell phones and other wireless devices in Alabama public schools. The statute permits exclusions for medical conditions, emergencies, and educational objectives. Additionally, it requires social media training and internet safety guidelines.
In his remarks to the board, Dr. Frank Costanzo, the acting superintendent of Pelham City Schools, discussed the law.
Costanzo stated, “We’re working on communication pieces regarding the legislation.” It will address numerous often asked questions about what transpires, what happens, and disciplinary actions. Hopefully, it will make the legislation’s aim and purpose more clear to parents and kids.
Next, under new business, the council accepted the following things, including the confirmation of Sean Anderson as PCS’s assistant athletic director, although on a part-time basis.
It is suggested that Board Policy 6.18: Electronic Communication Devices be amended. Change the policy to reflect the new standards of the Freeing our Classrooms of Unnecessary Screens for Safety (FOCUS Act) and change the title to read: Wireless Communication Devices.
It is suggested that Board Policy 4.95: Internet Safety be amended to reflect the new law, The Freeing Our Classrooms of Unnecessary Screens for Safety (FOCUS Act), and update the policy with the current needs.
It is suggested that the bus driver wage schedule be amended.
Suggestion for approving the custodial salary schedule modification
Proposal to authorize the implementation of the 207-day instructional support (reading and math coach) pay schedule
It is suggested that the 2025–2026 Salary Schedules be approved.
Suggestion to accept the academic calendar modification for 2025–2026
Eight system-owned buses—three 2009 models and five 2013 models—should be declared surplus property.
Suggest that Southeast Auction Company, Inc. be given the contract by the Board to sell the eight buses that were considered surplus property.
It is suggested that the Pelham Board of Education accept a part-time employment contract with Sean Anderson for the Assistant Athletic Director position, which would start on Friday, August 1 and last through Wednesday, December 31.
Proposal to approve a part-time employment contract between Kevin Finch and the Pelham Board of Education for the role of Student Services worker, starting on Friday, August 1 and ending on Wednesday, December 31
It is suggested that the Pelham Board of Education accept a part-time employment contract with Patrick McGavin for the role of child nutrition worker, starting on Friday, August 1 and ending on Wednesday, December 31.
It is suggested that the Pelham Board of Education accept a part-time employment contract with Paul Hamilton for the custodian position, which would start on Friday, August 1 and last through Wednesday, December 31.
It is suggested that the 2025–2026 athletic supplement schedule modifications be approved.
Pelham’s search for a new superintendent following Dr. Chuck Ledbetter’s retirement was updated during the meeting by board president Robert Plummer.
We are nearing a decision and anticipate holding a special meeting within the next few weeks.
