Bridget Brink, the former ambassador of the United States to Ukraine, is thinking about running for Congress in her native Michigan.
After 28 years as a diplomat, Brink is considering running for office in Michigan’s 7th congressional district, which is presently held by Republican Tom Barrett. Prior to her move to the Senate earlier this year, Democrat Elissa Slotkin represented the Lansing-area district, which the Cook Political Report rates as a tossup.
“I’ve dedicated my life to public service — working under five Presidents, both Democratic and Republican,” Brink said in a statement. “I’m exploring my options and the best way to continue to serve my country and my great home state of Michigan.”

In April, Brink left her position as ambassador to Ukraine. She stated in an opinion piece published in the Detroit Free Press last week that she resigned because of policy disagreements with the Trump administration. President Trump has pushed for a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, occasionally criticizing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the process.
She stated on Sunday, “I resigned from both the Foreign Service and Ukraine because the administration’s policy from the start was to apply pressure to the victim, Ukraine, rather than the aggressor, Russia. I think that peace at any cost is not peace at all, even though I completely agree that the war must end. It’s appeasement, and history has shown us that appeasement only breeds more conflict.
Brink is a career diplomat who served in Kyiv during the first few months of the Trump administration after being confirmed by the Senate to the position soon after Russia began its full-scale invasion in 2022.
