Speeding is being strictly enforced in New York City (NYC). Speeding is a major contributing factor to the number of fatal traffic accidents that occur each year.
Many states and cities are examining workable solutions to address this issue in order to protect everyone using the roads and help law enforcement make sure that all drivers are abiding by the traffic laws.
New measures to keep an eye on the city’s bridges, tunnels, and construction zones have been announced by New York City.
In NYC, speeding is associated with a higher number of traffic fatalities
The National Safety Council estimates that speeding is responsible for almost one-third of all traffic fatalities, with an average of 32 fatalities per day from collisions involving speeding drivers.
A driver who speeds greatly increases the likelihood of an accident because they have less time to react on the road to prevent a collision and because they are reducing the following distance between vehicles. This means that if someone were to brake suddenly, the speeding driver would have less time to react.
The likelihood of a crash occurring and the severity of the crash are directly correlated with an increase in average speed, according to data from the World Health Organisation.
For instance, there is a 4% chance of a fatal collision and a 3% chance of a serious injury collision for every 1% increase in average speed. Additionally, pedestrians’ livelihoods are at risk because a speed increase from 50 km/h to 65 km/h increases the likelihood of death by 4.5 times.
Extending the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement Initiative in New York
As part of the state’s Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement program, New York City recently announced new modifications and consequences.
The program is intended to strengthen the state’s ongoing efforts to prevent drivers from speeding in work zones in order to protect construction workers and make highways safer. It was created in response to the 378 work-zone intrusions that occurred in 2021.
Governor Kathy Hochul recently signed new legislation to expand New York State’s Automated Work Zone Enforcement Program.
The legislation would install speed cameras in construction zones on bridges and tunnels to monitor speeding and automatically ticket drivers who are caught doing so.
You will be fined $50 for the first time you are caught speeding, $75 for the second time within 18 months, and $100 for any additional infractions that take place during that time.

Additional adjustments for citizens of New York
When it comes to lowering speeding and other traffic infractions, New York has been especially proactive.
Sammy’s Law, which was passed in response to the 2013 death of 12-year-old Sammy Cohen Eckstein at the hands of a speeding motorist, is also lowering the speed limit in New York City this year from 25 mph to 20 mph.
The city is currently implementing the speed reduction in phases, but by the end of the year, the new speed limit will be applied throughout the entire city.
With more than 2,000 speed cameras to help police enforce speeding fines, the city also boasts one of the biggest automated traffic enforcement programs in the United States.
City officials claim that during the course of the program’s implementation and growth over the previous three decades, speeding incidents have decreased by 70%. All drivers will travel on safer roads thanks to these modifications, particularly in a densely populated city like New York.
