Eight Million Californians Urged to Avoid Sun Due to Health Warning

As a heat wave raises temperatures in some parts of Southern California by up to 20 degrees, more than eight million residents have been advised to stay out of the sun.

As a heat wave brings unseasonably warm temperatures to the area, the Los Angeles office of the National Weather Service (NWS) revised the heat advisory that was first issued on Tuesday to confirm that it would remain in effect until 9 p.m. local time on Thursday.

The Austin region was hotter last week than Death Valley, California, often known as the hottest place on Earth, triggering an extreme heat warning. Texas has also been seeing above-normal temperatures for this time of year.

According to the NWS’s heat advisory, residents in affected areas should avoid the sun and avoid leaving people or pets in closed cars. Additionally, people should stay in air-conditioned rooms and drink lots of water.

The following locations are under the heat advisory:

  • Calabasas and Agoura Hills
  • Eastern San Fernando Valley
  • Eastern Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area
  • Western San Fernando Valley
  • Western Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area

More than a dozen cities, including Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and East Los Angeles, are also under a heat advisory.

Don’t Miss:

While the heat wave is pushing temperatures 20 degrees above normal in some places, it does not indicate whether temperatures are expected to be hotter than normal this summer, NWS meteorologist Mike Wofford, who works at the Los Angeles office told.

“I don’t think I can recall a summer where we didn’t have at least a few that required some extra attention,” Wofford stated. “But I don’t think because we’ve had a couple here necessarily means we’re going to have a hotter-than-normal summer. We can’t really project that based on a couple of events.”

Even though this heat wave isn’t as bad as the one that struck Southern California a few weeks ago, it’s still hot enough to make physical activities like hiking difficult.
