Southern California Gas Prices Drop Ahead of Memorial Day Weekend

According to the most recent Weekend Gas Watch from the Automobile Club of Southern California, drivers in Southern California are experiencing some respite at the pump just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

Despite earlier predictions that Californians would not experience any relief at the pump over the holiday weekend, the most recent report, which was released on Thursday, reveals that gas prices decreased.

“Southern Californians will be paying the lowest pump prices since 2021 to fill up for their Memorial Day getaways, which they will be taking in record numbers,” Auto Club spokesperson Doug Shupe stated. “Gas prices are backing off from a price spike earlier this month caused by a Northern California refinery fire and some unplanned refinery outages. According to Oil Price Information Service, those supply issues have been resolved, and refineries have increased their gasoline production.”

Prices dropped two cents to $4.80 per gallon in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area, and drivers in San Diego are paying $4.80, which is three cents less than they did the previous week.

The largest weekly drop occurred on the Central Coast, where average prices dropped seven cents to $4.72 per gallon, a 45-cent decrease from the previous year.

The average in Bakersfield is $4.73, which is 46 cents less than the amount from the previous year and two cents less than it was last week.

California’s average gas price as of Friday morning is $4.84, compared to the national average of $3.19.
