A girl from North Texas is battling a fatal illness, and her grandfather is doing everything in his power to help her receive the care she requires.
‘Mudbugs for Mabel’ is a fundraiser that will take place in Lewisville on Saturday, May 24 in the hopes of raising funds for the 3-year-old girl’s family’s medical needs.
“It’s kind of hard to explain leukemia to a 3-year-old so we’re using the term the big sick,” Mabel’s mother Sarah Manchey stated.
Due to Mabel’s need for frequent chemotherapy treatments, the 3-year-old’s mother, a kindergarten teacher, was forced to take time off work after learning of her cancer diagnosis in April. Mabel requires expensive medication and other treatments.
“It definitely has us a little concerned, but you do what you do for your kids, but you figure it out, and you make it work,” Manchey stated.
Someone proposed holding a crawfish boil as a way to raise money for Mabel’s grandfather’s Cajun food store in Lewisville.
“I went ‘oh my gosh that’s a fantastic idea’ so it was a God thing,” Mabel’s grandfather Billy Howell stated.

“When he suggested the idea, I thought it was awesome, it’s our favorite time of year with crawfish,” Manchey stated.
Wearing her trademark pink chemo cap and a smile, Mabel intends to be there.
A family helps a young girl get over “the big sick” by relying on their love for one another and their love of crawfish.
