A man from eastern Wisconsin who detained local authorities and residents for more than 36 hours starting on May 8 may now be charged with several crimes.
The guy involved in the multi-day standoff on Fox Glen Road in Fredonia was brought into custody by the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday after being released from a behavioral mental health facility, according to deputies from the Sheriff’s Office on May 22.
The suspect in the standoff from May 8 to May 10 was also identified by authorities as Matthew Novak, a 37-year-old inhabitant of Fredonia.
Authorities said Novak was “heavily armed” and had fired many rounds from the house during the incident, prompting the nearby community to be advised to evacuate or hide in place.
On May 14, a thorough examination of the house revealed:
- Four handguns
- Nine long guns
- Ammunition
- Night vision goggles
- Thermal optics
- Multiple electronic devices
The following criminal charges have been forwarded to the Ozaukee County District Attorney’s Office, and Novak is presently being detained at the Ozaukee County Jail:
- Battery or Threat to a Law Enforcement Officer
- Endanger Safety by Use of a Dangerous Weapon
- First Degree Reckless Endangering Safety
- Failure to Comply with Law Enforcement Officer’s Attempt to Take Person into Custody
Once the charges are officially filed, Novak will be given a date for his initial court appearance.
