Aventura Community Honors Israeli Embassy Staffers Killed in Tragic Incident

South Floridians are gathering together to remember the two Israeli embassy staff members who were killed in Washington, District of Columbia, this week in what the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has referred to as an act of terrorism.

At the vigil that took place in Aventura on Friday, dozens of people recalled the lives of Sarah Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky. They were carrying banners that read “Stand against terrorism,” “Stand up against hate,” “Violence is the cost of hate speech,” alongside the words “We are all Sarah and Yaron.”

A gunman is said to have shot and killed the couple as they were leaving an event that was held at the Capital Jewish Museum, according to the police.

“Free Palestine” was yelled by the alleged gunman after the police placed him in handcuffs.

Officers of the law were also present at the vigil. Evans Ross, who was one of the organizers, stated that the entire community is in a state of mourning.

“I think it’s all of our jobs to fight antisemitism just as it’s all of our jobs to stand up against bigotry no matter where it comes from or who it targets,” Ross stated. “The person who committed these murders said they did so in the name of Gaza, and he murdered two people who had just spent their night talking about how to fund diplomatic solutions to getting humanitarian aid into Gaza.”

Originally hailing from Israel, Pini and Cyna Benari have since relocated to South Florida, where they are now members of the Israeli community. Among the many people who came to the vigil, they were two of the attendees.

“I think it has to be more security all over the place,” Pini Benari stated. “It’s terrible that’s how it ended, it’s terrible it has to stop.”

“To see two flowers, two young people murdered, why, why, something bothers you talk, why murder, who gives them the guns to murder, why?” Cyna Benari stated.
