Six Virginia Democrats Compete for Lieutenant Governor Nomination

There is a significant early advantage for Democrat Abigail Spanberger over Republican Winsome Earle-Sears, according to a new poll of voters in the state of Virginia.

There is a 15-point lead for Spanberger, according to the Roanoke college poll; however, the pollsters also state that it is still very early and that Virginians are not yet emotionally invested in the race.

On the other hand, the race for lieutenant governor is a different story. The Democratic Party has six candidates who will compete against one another in a primary election in approximately three weeks.

The six Democrats who are hoping to join Spanberger’s ticket in November as the nominee for lieutenant governor are considered to be candidates for the position.

According to the amount of money that has been spent on campaigns, Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney, state Senator Ghazala Hashmi, and state Senator Aaron Rouse are at the forefront of the race. Additionally, Prince William County School Board Chair Babur Lateef is also in the running.

“When Donald Trump came for federal workers and independent contractors, I passed legislation to protect federal workers and independent contractors, as well as our veterans,” Rouse stated.

Hashmi stated: “For protecting our federal workforce, we need to ensure that they get legal representation, that they have access to job training opportunities, and that they are receiving all of their benefits, especially health benefits.”

Additionally, the candidates were questioned regarding their support for a casino in Tysons, which is a topic that is likely to be brought up once more in the following year.

All of the candidates, with the exception of two, were against it; however, state senators Hashmi and Rouse stated that they were both open to the idea.

The primary election for the Democratic nominee for attorney general is the only other statewide primary election that will take place in Virginia this year.

A primary election will be held between Shannon Taylor, a commonwealth’s attorney in Henrico County, and Jay Jones, a former state delegate from Norfolk. Taylor will compete against Jones.
