Navy Veteran Honored on Memorial Day After Losing Home in Palisades Fire

One U.S. Navy veteran who lost his house to the Palisades Fire was given a unique tribute on Monday as many Americans remember the deaths lost while serving their country this Memorial Day.

The 93-year-old John Lehne worked as a cryptographer and radio operator during the Korean War.

He was among a number of veterans who were honored at a special celebration held in Ivy Park in Playa Vista, the neighborhood where he relocated after the wildfire in January destroyed his home.

“All of the memories that we accumulated during our time with our children, with our home, with our life together – that was all lost,” Lehne stated.

Before the fire, Lehne had lived in the Pacific Palisades for more than 60 years. The fire destroyed family photos and other mementos from his Navy days.

“We are sorry and very, very sorry that we lost all of that,” he stated. “But one good thing is we have it all in our hearts and minds, so that will never go away.”

Given what the holiday means to him, Lehne expressed his gratitude that his new community not only welcomed him but also wished to honor his achievements to the nation.

“Memorial Day to me means a very wonderful way to say thank you and how much we appreciate what all of the men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces on how we appreciate them putting their lives on the line, giving their lives,” he stated.
