Penn Medicine, a Philadelphia-based organization, announced Thursday that it will no longer perform gender-affirming procedures on anyone younger than 19.
According to a statement from PJ Brennan, chief medical officer at Penn Medicine, the organization will no longer perform gender-affirming surgical treatments in head and neck operations, obstetrics and gynecology, urology, and plastic surgery.
“As a result of current guidance established by the federal government,” the message states, the shift has occurred.
The announcement follows the signing of an executive order by President Trump that limits gender-affirming care for those under the age of 19.
The directive has been challenged in court and threatens government money given to organizations who offer gender-affirming care to those under the age of 18.
“We remain deeply committed to ensuring a respectful and welcoming environment for all members of the communities we serve and providing comprehensive medical and behavioral health care and psychosocial support for LGBTQ+ individuals while complying with federal government requirements,” Brennan stated.
The Trump administration has already criticized the University of Pennsylvania, claiming that the institution broke regulations ensuring women equal chances in sports by allowing a transgender swimmer to compete on the women’s team and enter team facilities in 2022.

According to Penn, it has always complied with Ivy League and NCAA regulations governing student involvement on sports teams.
Due of the problem, the Trump administration announced in March that it would stop providing the university with $175 million in funds.
