Alligator caused crash in Orange City; 2 rushed to hospital

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that two motorcycle riders collided with an alligator on Saturday on Interstate 4 in Orange City.

According to authorities, the collisions began in the westbound lanes of I-4 around mile marker 110 at approximately 6:08 p.m.

The riders, a 25-year-old lady from Orange City and a 67-year-old male from De Leon Springs, were both riding west in the inside lane when they collided with the alligator, according to a statement from FHP.

According to the statement, the collision forced the motorcycles to deviate to the left of the road, where the bike belonging to the DeLeon Springs guy went into the wood line and collided with a tree.

According to troopers, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was sent to help with the injured alligator, and both riders were brought to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

FHP continues its investigation.

What to do if you see an alligator in Florida?

  • Do not approach or feed the alligator – it’s dangerous and illegal.
  • Stay at least 30 feet away from the animal.
  • Keep pets on a leash and away from water.
  • Call the FWC Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 1-866-FWC-GATOR if it’s 4+ feet and a threat.
  • Do not attempt to capture or move the alligator yourself.
  • Be extra cautious during mating season (April–June).
  • Obey warning signs near lakes, ponds, and canals.
