Above-Average Hurricane Season Forecasted Amid Warming Oceans

The 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins on Sunday, June 1. The season, which peaks in September, is defined as the period between June 1 and November 30 when tropical systems are most likely to form across the Atlantic Ocean.

An above-normal season of 13 to 19 named storms, of which 6 to 10 turn into hurricanes, including three to five major hurricanes, is predicted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, for this year.

ENSO It is anticipated that an above-average season will result from a combination of neutral conditions (near-normal sea surface temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific Ocean) and warmer-than-normal waters in the Atlantic.

Keep in mind that this is a broad forecast for the whole Atlantic Ocean basin and does not identify the precise locations of hurricanes.

We need to be aware of water hazards, such as rip currents, storm surge, and inland flooding, according to National Weather Service director Ken Graham.

Don’t Miss:

“The water is really the biggest killer in these things [hurricanes] with fatalities being the highest over the years. I’ve seen so many cases where the inland flooding causes more fatalities than on the coast,” Graham continued. “We’ve done so much work with storm surge, we’re actually losing more people to rip currents than we are storm surge.”

Laura Grimm, chief of staff, responded, “We are fully staffed at the National Hurricane Center and ready to go,” when asked if the agency is prepared for the hurricane season in light of recent cuts to NOAA.

This administration, NOAA, and the Department of Commerce are truly making this a top priority. Therefore, we provide our national weather staff with a lot of support.

It’s time to get ready for any possible tropical system by evaluating your risks, assembling your storm gear, and creating a plan.
