ALABASTERDuring a meeting on Monday, July 28, the Alabaster City Council approved agreements for paving for the Veterans Park recreational trail as well as turn lanes and traffic lights at Alabaster Boulevard.
A resolution authorizing an agreement with AECOM for intersection upgrades at U.S. 31 and Alabaster Boulevard in an amount not to exceed $86,591.42 was unanimously passed by the council at the meeting.
The deal is a component of the city’s continuous endeavor to link U.S. 31 and Alabaster Boulevard close to Jim N. Nicks. Alongside the new road, a research on the optimal route will assist the city optimize its development potential.
Zach Zahariadis, the council member for Alabaster’s Ward 6, stated, “We also signed a contract with AECOM for design enhancements to begin the preliminary plans for the punch-through road for Alabaster Boulevard.” Although it will be a few years in the future, we must start laying the foundation and making plans for what we can do and where we can build this road.
The following designs and additions are included in the agreement’s scope:
- The addition of a left turn to U.S. 31 southbound at the intersection of U.S. 31 and Alabaster Boulevard
- The addition of a right turn to U.S. 31 northbound onto Alabaster Boulevard
- Design Alabaster Boulevard to the back of radius
- Restriping of lanes on U.S. 31 from Promenade Parkway to the new Alabaster Boulevard
- Modifying the existing traffic signal to accommodate the new intersection approach
- The development of traffic signal coordination timings to modify the existing signal timing to account for the new intersection approach
- The installation and tuning of the new traffic signal coordination timings
- A coordination report for review and approval from the Alabama Department of Transportation Regional Traffic Operations Program for the new timings
A resolution to enter into an agreement with Massey Asphalt and Paving for the Veterans Park recreational trail’s section G north loop, with a maximum value of $53,820, was passed by the Alabaster City Council in other business.
The recreational route in Veterans Park needs to be repaired, according to Fred Hawkins, director of environmental, engineering, and construction services. InSite Engineering’s assessment suggested pavement overlay, tree removal, tree root cutting, and patching.
The city has divided the project into a north and south loop to minimize the impact on the public and maintain the path open in certain places. With the authorized resolution permitting the patch work, the first work on the north loop has been completed.
In other news, the following was authorized by the Alabaster City Council:
- An ordinance at the request of Charles R. Holderfield and Whitney Holderfield annexing 104 Meadow Creek Lane into Alabaster
- A resolution appointing election officers for the 2025 Municipal Election
- A Memorandum of Understanding with the Alabaster Water Board for a multi-year reimbursement for water meter replacement in the amount of $596,695
- A resolution for an updated Memorandum of Understanding with Shelby County to use election equipment for the 2025 Municipal Election
- Set a public hearing for Monday, Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. to declare weeds located at 1804 Mohawk Drive, Alabaster, AL as a public nuisance and order them abated
On Thursday, August 7, the newly remodeled sewer treatment plant located at 104 8th Ave. Northwest, Alabaster, AL 35007, will host a work session before the next regularly scheduled Alabaster City Council meeting on Monday, August 11.
