People are preparing to visit the massive online retailer to take advantage of the offers offered by Amazon Prime Day. However, despite the rush to click and buy, Amazon is discontinuing one of its free offerings.
According to CNBC, Amazon will discontinue its stand-alone Freevee app next month. Launched in 2019, the service featured free videos, original programming, and select Prime Video material accessible through an app. It was a part of IMDb, the movie and TV website that Amazon acquired in 1998.
With a Prime membership, customers will still be able to access Amazon’s free content even when the Freevee app shuts down in August.
According to a representative, the content available to Prime members will remain unchanged, and non-Prime members will still have access to a wide range of free streaming content, such as a large library of FAST Channels, licensed films and television shows, and a few Amazon MGM Studios Originals.
Amazon initially stressed the usage of Prime Video as a one-stop entertainment destination when it announced plans to shut down the app in late 2024.
Non-Prime users will have access to Prime Video content marked “Watch for Free” in Freevee regions. The Emmy-nominated reality comedy series Jury Duty, the crime thriller Bosch: Legacy, the Australian soap opera Neighbours, Alex Rider Season 2, Leverage: Redemption, and Judy Justice, which stars Judge Judy Sheindlin, are among the shows available on Freevee, according to Variety.
