Restaurateur Christos Valtzoglou has found a winning formula with this longstanding hideaway, which continues to sparkle as brightly as the Aegean Sea on a summer day. Taking its name from the Greek translation of “made from clay,” this contemporary taverna also features a ceiling canopy of suspended terra-cotta pots, rustic whitewashed walls and lapis-blue insets.
Pale-green stemware and stark-white crockery are used to serve wines from the homeland as well as a menu of rustic, home-style food. Keftedakia are light and texturally exquisite meatballs, pan fried in olive oil and proffered as an appetizer. Gigantes are baked in honey-scented tomato-dill sauce; while aginares moussaka is a creamy vegetarian take on the classic, made here with artichokes.

Greek potatoes are the greatest potatoes. For proof of this, you should go to Yefsi on the Upper East Side and order anything that comes with a side of them. They’re sliced in half, extremely lemon-y, and stand up on the plate like little Stonehenge wannabees. This spot is definitely on the fancy side, and you should save it for dinners where everyone is comfortable spending a bit of money. Order the zucchini chips and lamb souvlaki, and it’ll be worth it.

This lavish, fancy-occasion-warranting steakhouse procures its cuts from its own butcher shop, located next door to the restaurant. Some of the dry-aged steaks aren’t simply seared; they also get a distinctly Greek treatment of olive oil, dried oregano, and salt. Most of the appetizers and sides include a small handful of Grecian standards like a trio of spreads (caviar-spiked taramosalata, tzatziki, and roasted eggplant), with some creative creations like gyro tacos topped with avocado tzatziki.
