A Texas volleyball team visiting Reno for a tournament was involved in a fatal crash Saturday, killing a grandmother and injuring four adolescent players, two gravely.
According to Nevada State Police, the incident occurred around 6:55 a.m. on southbound Interstate 580 near Moana Lane. According to investigators, a box truck failed to slow down as it approached traffic, striking the rear of a Hyundai SUV, causing it to overturn and collide with numerous other vehicles.
Three adults and four teenagers were in the Hyundai. According to Nevada State Police, two girls were ejected from the rear cargo compartment and sustained life-threatening injuries.
Lorraine Chavez, 62, of San Antonio, Texas, was transferred to a local hospital and died.
Chavez and the four teenagers were not wearing seatbelts, according to NSP.
Nobody in the other vehicles was wounded.
The squad was in Reno for the NCVA Far Western National Qualifier, which is a three-day competition that leads to the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship.
