EAST NEW YORK, Brooklyn – A 37-year-old deli worker was stabbed to death in what police are calling an unprovoked and random attack inside a convenience store in East New York early Friday morning, according to ABC7 New York.
Early Morning Violence Shocks Community
The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. at a local deli on Pennsylvania Avenue.
According to law enforcement sources, the victim was working behind the counter when a man suddenly lunged at him with a knife. Surveillance footage is currently being reviewed by investigators to determine the precise chain of events.
Witnesses told police the suspect entered the store quietly before the sudden outburst of violence. The victim, suffering from multiple stab wounds, was rushed to Brookdale Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Suspect in Custody, No Clear Motive
The suspect—also a 37-year-old male—was apprehended at the scene by responding officers. According to police sources cited by ABC7, there is no indication that the victim and attacker knew each other, and the motive remains unclear.
Authorities are treating the incident as a possible mental health-related episode, but further evaluation is pending. Charges are expected to be filed once questioning and initial reviews are completed.
Community Left in Mourning
Neighbors and regular patrons of the deli expressed their grief and disbelief over the violent turn of events. “He was a kind man, always polite and welcoming,” one resident said. “This feels so senseless.”
Local leaders are calling for increased patrols and better support for mental health outreach programs in the area to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
