California man busted with 200 pounds of cocaine in Illinois; Sentenced to federal prison

A California man caught carrying $1.8 million worth of cocaine through Illinois was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison on Monday.

Ronald Coleman, 45, of Barstow, California, pleaded guilty to the charges filed against him earlier this year.

According to the US Department of Justice, Coleman was stopped on Interstate 88 near Morrison in April 2023 while driving a big truck. During the traffic stop, a K9 detected the presence of drugs.

Police seized two suitcases containing 91 kilograms of cocaine worth $1.8 million.

Authorities say Coleman was moving the drugs from California to a warehouse in Chicago, where he planned to swap the cocaine for cash.

Police stated he also had a handgun in the truck.

The 11-year sentence was handed by U.S. District Judge Iain Johnson during a hearing in Rockford federal court.
