One person was killed after a car reportedly went off a flyover and onto Lone Tree’s light rail tracks early Tuesday morning.
According to South Metro Fire Rescue, firefighters were dispatched to the incident around 10200 Station Way on the tracks between the C-470 and Interstate-25 intersection at 1:45 a.m.
According to personnel, a vehicle drove off the flyover and into the tracks. The car was apparently wedged between a light rail train and a wall.
The train carried an operator and a passenger, both of whom were reportedly unhurt. South Metro Fire Rescue verified that an occupant of the vehicle had died.
Lone Tree police later issued an update, stating that “it appears it was a single car crash with a driver.”
According to the Regional Transportation District, the car was removed at 9:30 a.m. However, crews must inspect the track before operations may resume. A structural engineer is also assessing the retaining wall.
According to RTD, all E line trips are suspended. Shuttles will replace the R line between Lincoln and Peoria, as well as the H and E lines between Southmoor and Ridgegate, for both north and southbound excursions.
The Colorado State Patrol and Lone Tree police are looking into the crash.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the northbound I-25 onramp from eastbound C-470 is closed. Lone Tree police reported that the road was reopened around 6:12 a.m.
