Car erupts in flames after speeding through Fresno intersection; driver dead after crash

A horrific collision at a hazardous Fresno crossroads on Friday morning claimed one life.

At 1:59 a.m., officers were called to the intersection of Friant and Shepherd Avenues when a car drove through the intersection at a high speed, went airborne, and collided with several parked cars in Woodward Park.

Police in Fresno According to Mark Van Whye, the car was heading west on Shepherd without turning north or south and proceeded into the curb before striking an embankment, which caused it to go over the fence and collide with other cars in a yard where city equipment used for park maintenance is stored.

Shortly after the collision, the car caught fire.

The driver was declared deceased.

Van Whye stated, “There is a steep little embankment” that caused the car to shoot over the fence and trees before coming to rest in the yard.

The whole incident, including the radio dispatch of witnesses phoning 911, was caught by Friant Roulette on YouTube.

Numerous crashes, including fatalities, have occurred at one of the city’s worst intersections.

The inquiry is still under progress.

Awaiting next of kin, the driver’s age and name are unknown.
