Car veered off I-40, rolled multiple times leaving 4 dead in San Bernardino County

According to officials, a severe rollover crash involving just one vehicle claimed the lives of four persons in a San Bernardino County desert on Sunday morning.

It occurred on the I-40 Freeway close to mile marker 30 at approximately 7:45 a.m., according to a Barstow California Highway Patrol official.

According to an initial inquiry, the vehicle was on the freeway heading west when the driver lost control and swerved off the road into the desert for an unidentified reason.

According to CHP, after going off-road, the vehicle lost all control and rolled over “several times.”

The fourth patient passed away at the scene a short while later, while three more were killed when they were ejected from the vehicle.

One patient was reported to be trapped, partially protruding from the car that had crashed on its side, according to CHP’s incident report record.

Officers blocked all westbound lanes until around 8:48 a.m., when at least one lane was reopened, according to the report log.

On Sunday, CHP Barstow posted on X about 2:30 p.m. to inform drivers that one of the local freeway lanes remained restricted.

“We are working multiple crashes along westbound Interstate 40 in between the Desert Oasis Rest Area and east of Hector Road,” read the X post. “The #2 (slow lane) will be closed in certain locations. Remember to move over or slow down for emergency vehicles at work.”

There are few specifics, and authorities did not immediately provide the identity of the patients or more details regarding the other crashes that were referenced in the X post.

The accident is being investigated, according to CHP.
