Early Thursday in south Lubbock County, a train, two motorbikes, an SUV, and a pickup truck were involved in a string of multi-vehicle chain-reaction incidents that resulted in two fatalities and one injury.
According to a statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the collisions occurred at approximately 5:18 a.m. Thursday on U.S. Highway 84 approximately a third of a mile east of Southeast Drive and involved five automobiles.
According to investigators, a 1996 Harley Davidson motorcycle was heading east on U.S. 84 when it crashed into the cable barrier after veering off the road and into the center median for an unidentified reason.
The motorcycle crashed into the westbound lanes after crossing the barrier. On U.S. 84, a 2016 Chevrolet SUV traveling west collided with the motorcyclist. Before coming to a stop close to the railroad track, the SUV entered the north-barrow ditch and went into a side skid, leaving the road. The SUV was hit by a passing train, but the driver was unharmed.
After a 2016 Harley Davidson returned to the scene of the initial motorcycle incident, a 2020 Chevrolet truck traveling west on U.S. 84 was coming up behind the motorcycle.
After splitting from the center median and the left lane of U.S. 84, the 2016 motorcycle crashed into the 2020 truck after entering the road from the shoulder. Christopher Lucero, 37, of Hale Center, was the driver of the second motorcycle. He was transported to University Medical Center, where he subsequently passed away. The DPS statement said he was wearing a helmet.
Jerry Crisp, 59, of Lubbock, was the first motorcyclist to be killed at the scene. He didn’t have a helmet on. The 2020 pickup’s driver was admitted to the hospital after suffering minor wounds.
Since the inquiry is still continuing, other circumstances that contributed to the incidents were not immediately available. The Texas Department of Public Safety is looking into these incidents and will divide them into three crash investigations.
