A pursuit involving Virginia State Police ended with one person detained and one trooper hurt.

Chesapeake police reported that shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, they received a call regarding a car pursuit that began in Elizabeth City. The suspect vehicle, a 2011 Lexus, appears to have collided with an Elizabeth City County deputy’s vehicle.

After the suspect crossed into Chesapeake, the Chesapeake Police Department intervened and used spike strips.

According to CPD, the motorist, 53-year-old Heather Barrington of Chesapeake, continued onto Interstate 64. Troopers from the Virginia State Police Department also assisted.

Barrington’s vehicle collided with three state police cruisers before coming to a rest on I-64 at the Indian River Road exit. Virginia State Police said it caused one cruiser to crash and the airbags to deploy. One trooper sustained non-life threatening injuries.

According to VSP, Barrington was suspected of being under the influence.

Barrington is charged with eluding, three counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, child endangerment, three counts of destruction of state property, resisting arrest, felony hit and run with or intent to injure, reckless driving, unsafe lane changes, smoking with an infant in the vehicle, improper passing, unrestrained child, and no seatbelt.
