According to a state organization, about 1,500 workers in the Chicago area will be let go in the upcoming weeks.
In accordance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which mandates that businesses with more than 75 employees give 60 days or more’s notice of planned layoffs, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity reports that the layoffs will take place at six businesses in the Chicago area over the summer.
The Momence Packing Company in Kankakee County, which declared its liquidation earlier this month, was one of the businesses affected by layoffs. Although over 300 workers will be impacted by the company’s plan to move Johnsonville meatpacking operations to multiple other states, workers will still be paid and get benefits through August.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, CareerBuilder + Monster Worldwide, a company formed by the merging of two titans in the labor market, would fire around 400 employees by August 4 in order to close its U.S. headquarters in Chicago’s Loop.
Ametek Inc., a St. Charles-based electronics manufacturer, is closing its factory and will lay off 167 employees.
133 people will be laid off as a result of Bristol Myers Squibb’s intentions to close a viral vector production facility in the Libertyville suburb.
Nearly 300 employees in the suburban hamlet may lose their employment as a result of Cleveland Cliffs, a steelmaker, closing three sites in the upcoming months, including two in Pennsylvania and one in Riverdale.
Lastly, according to some reports, Oak View Group will lay off 203 workers at McCormick Place, claiming the termination of a venue management contract.

The Peoria Journal-Star reports that in the upcoming weeks, 14 companies in Illinois will lay off around 2,100 workers. Carle Health in Champaign is on that list; early this year, the company declared it will shut down its Health Alliance and another affiliate.
The adjustment will result in the layoff of 612 employees, according to the Champaign News-Gazette.
At least 536 workers have been affected by layoff notifications in the past 30 days, according to Illinois officials, and almost 5,000 have been affected in the past 90 days.
