Child found naked in street during rainstorm; Shreveport mother faces neglect charges

Before being discovered by a bus driver who took the child on board and contacted the authorities, a woman in Louisiana was jailed when her 3-year-old daughter was seen “running naked in the street during a rain storm.” Authorities said Kaneesha Williams was arrested on Tuesday and charged with several charges of criminal neglect of family.

Officers responded to a “distressing situation” at approximately 5:30 p.m. on May 6, 2025, regarding a young boy who was discovered naked and alone at Sussex Avenue and Corbett Street, some 300 miles northwest of Baton Rouge, according to a news release from the Shreveport Police Department. After locating the child and escorting them onto his bus until emergency personnel arrived, the school bus driver reportedly made the first 911 call.

After a preliminary inquiry, police claimed the youngster told them she lived more than a quarter of a mile from where she was found, in a house in the 5300 block of Sussex Avenue. They made their presence known when the cops arrived at the house and discovered that the front door was without a working doorknob.

The mother of the young girl, Williams, was then introduced to the police.

“Officers conducted a welfare check inside the home and were met with deplorable living conditions,” the release states. “The residence had no furniture and was littered with trash. The kitchen appeared to have been uncleaned for an extended period, with dirty dishes piled throughout and no refrigerator or food in sight. Further investigation revealed that multiple children had been living in the home.”

Three more children were discovered inside the house, according to the authorities, during the welfare check. Authorities claim that living conditions in the rest of the house were no better than in the kitchen.

“A single mattress was found on the floor surrounded by clothing,” the release says. “The bathroom was in an unsanitary state, with toilets and bathtubs filled with feces and urine. Officers determined the plumbing was non-functional.”

The pee and feces were “back-flowing into the house from the bathroom because it did not have running water,” Officer Chris Bordelon told Shreveport CBS station KSLA.

To help at the scene, police called the Department of Children and Family Services and juvenile investigators from Shreveport Police.

The living conditions that the children were subjected to deeply troubled the officers. And in the end, that’s what prompted the decision to include DCFS,” Bordelon continued.

“The officers were very distraught over the conditions in which the children were having to live. And ultimately, it’s what led to the response of bringing DCFS on board,” Bordelon added.

“This case was deeply troubling for all involved, and the Shreveport Police Department remains committed to protecting the welfare of the most vulnerable members of our community — our children,” the department said in a statement. “We urge anyone aware of similar situations to contact authorities immediately.”
