Authorities said on Wednesday that they had detained an illegal immigrant who had a firearms record.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported that 22-year-old Mexican national Gibram Torres was arrested in El Centro, California, a city only a short distance from Mexicali, Mexico.
According to ICE, Torres has a prior conviction for carrying a hidden firearm in a car. He is being detained while the deportation process is ongoing.
ICE reported this week that in the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s second term in office, the agency had detained 66,463 illegal aliens nationwide and removed 65,682.
According to ICE officials, the numbers include 2,288 members of various gangs, including 18th Street, MS-13, and the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang.
“Additionally, 1,329 were accused or convicted of sex offenses, and 498 were accused or convicted of murder,” said ICE Acting Director Todd M. Lyons.
According to officials, among those detained, their criminal histories include convictions or charges for 1,479 weapon violations, 6,398 DWIs/DUIs, and 9,639 assaults.
“This agency has set the bar on arrests and removals while upholding its national security mission,” ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan said.
