According to a news release from the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, a 78-year-old man was shot by deputies after he allegedly approached them brandishing a shotgun.
Surry County deputies responded to a report of what investigators called a “armed mental subject” on the 100 block of Alicia Lane in the White Plains neighborhood, close to Mount Airy, at approximately 11:09 a.m. on Friday.
According to deputies, there were gunshots coming from a residential area.
Deputies discovered 78-year-old Gaston Ruben Golding at the scene. When deputies arrived, Golding allegedly crashed into a garage. Golding allegedly pulled out a shotgun and pointed it at deputies as he approached them and attempted to engage in conversation.
Golding was struck by a deputy who fired their weapon.
Until emergency personnel arrived, deputies provided medical assistance. His injuries were not life-threatening, so he was brought to a hospital.
In accordance with customary procedure, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation.
