Detroit couple killed in Crash leaves behind 5 children; Driver charged

A Detroit woman is charged with causing a crash that killed a husband and wife who were beloved by the community and parents to five small children.

Pastor Phil Carr of Christ Church of Southfield honors two beloved friends who died in an unimaginable way.

“They were what I like to call Kingdom Nice. They were just really, really nice people. And unfortunately, there’s a shortage of nice people in the world,” said Carr.

Kwasi Agbottah, 43, and his wife, Elizabeth, 41, were attacked and killed while waiting for the bus at Fenkell and Evergreen on Friday night. They have now left behind five small children.

“Kwasi and Elizabeth were different in a good way,” Carr continued. “They didn’t have transportation on purpose. They lived a simple and meager life on purpose. They really wanted to give themselves to the community.”

The duo proudly described themselves as “urban missionaries.” Friends say they moved to Detroit before it became trendy and focused on mentoring young people.

“Their specialty was education,” Carr said. “Educating children, encouraging children, empowering children. In fact, Kwasi wrote several children’s books.”

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Dejah Berry, 33, in connection with the couple’s death in the crash. According to investigators, she was driving at high speeds when she lost control, crossed northbound Evergreen Road, and collided with the pair at the bus stop.

“I’ve been praying for her because who hasn’t done dumb stuff? But unfortunately, the dumb stuff that she did has cost two lives,” said Agbottah’s friend, Pastor Semmeal J. Thomas.

Berry’s counsel stated in court that she could not recall what happened and may have had a seizure. Prosecutors stood firm.

Family and friends are planning a celebration of life while doing everything they can to help five children who will now face life without the two parents who brought them into this world.
