Governor Beshear said Thursday that the state is officially taking applications for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) for people affected by the catastrophic storms that occurred in May.
The Kentucky Office of Unemployment Insurance is the place for unemployed people in Caldwell, Laurel, Pulaski, Russell, Trigg, and Union counties to apply for benefits.
Unemployed and independent contractors are included in this category, as are those “who were living or working in the affected areas and became unemployed or had work interrupted as a direct result (of) the severe storms.”
People must demonstrate that their jobs were “lost or interrupted” due to the storms in order to be eligible; otherwise, they would not be entitled for standard unemployment insurance benefits under either state or federal law.
“Farmers and other self-employed individuals who traditionally are ineligible for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits may qualify for DUA,” according to a press release.

Individuals must present a bill proving their address at the time of the storms, a photo ID, and their most recent federal or state income tax forms or check stubs in order to be eligible for assistance.
These have to be turned in within 21 days following the DUA application.
DUA is provided “so long as the individual’s unemployment remains a direct result of the disaster” between May 18 and November 22, 2025.
