Dried Fruit Recall Widens,19 States Now Under Health Warning

The dried apricots produced by Turkana Food Inc. have been made subject to a recall since the information on the presence of sulfites on the product’s packaging is not disclosed.

This year has seen a significant number of product recalls launched due to the risk for the following: damaged products, foodborne disease, contamination, and undeclared food allergies.

Every year, millions of people in the United States of America suffer from food sensitivities or food allergies. Eggs, milk, fish, wheat, soybeans, crustacean shellfish, sesame, tree nuts, and peanuts are those that are considered to be the nine “major” food allergens in the United States, as stated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to the warning issued by the FDA, the dried apricots sold under the Floria brand have a date of expiration that is November 2026. It is possible to locate the LOT number of the affected product, which is 440090478-15-333, at the bottom of the packaging.

The FDA notes that the product has a UPC Label with the number 2539560010, which is located on a sticker that is located at the very top of the package.

Distribution of the dried apricots took place in the following states: Florida, Kentucky, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Texas, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland, Ohio, Alabama, Missouri, and California.

The FDA has stated that as of Thursday, there have been no illnesses that have been reported. In addition, the advisory includes photographs of the product that is being recalled, which prospective buyers can use as a point of reference.

Part of the FDA’s advisory reads as follows: “The recall was the result of a routine sampling performed by the New York State Department of Agriculture and markets which revealed that the finished products contained Sulfites that were not listed on the product labelling. The company has ceased production and distribution of the products as FDA and the company continue their investigation to correct the issue with the manufacturer.”

The FDA has issued a request to customers who have purchased the recalled dried apricots to refrain from eating them and to return them to the place where they were originally purchased in order to receive a refund.

On weekdays, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern Time, individuals who have more inquiries can contact Turkana Foods Inc. by dialing 908-810-8800.
