Drivers Face $100 Penalties as Wisconsin Rolls Out New Enforcement Plan

Legislators in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, are working to put the city’s first automated camera program into place in an effort to reduce careless driving.

State senators LaTonya Johnson and Dora Drake are pushing the “Safe Roads Save Lives Act,” as the bill is known. Red-light infractions and speeding cars would both be tracked by the automated program, but unlawful parking would not be monitored by AI.

Cameras would be placed throughout the city in high-risk traffic areas as part of the scheme.

Each aldermanic district would be permitted to have up to five cameras, and before the cameras could be deployed, a public awareness campaign would need to be launched.

The Act is a component of the City of Milwaukee’s Vision Zero Action Plan, which intends to eradicate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2037.

Fines for traffic violations in Wisconsin range from $30 to $800. More of these fines are anticipated to be imposed if someone is caught speeding by the cameras.

Milwaukee’s automated driving program joins that of other cities

In an effort to improve road safety, several cities around the country have begun implementing autonomous driving initiatives.

The automated driving initiatives in New York City are especially noteworthy. The city has 750 school zones with more than 2,000 speeding cameras.

This year, Connecticut also began enforcing automated camera programs.

This year, the Department of Transportation formally launched the pilot program, which started in 2023 and has had widespread success in lowering speeding infractions.

Red-light cameras will also be enforced by the state as part of its automated driving initiative. Nonetheless, the use of this technology is still illegal in nine US jurisdictions.
