ALABASTERThe candidates for this year’s municipal election, which will take place on Tuesday, August 26, have been selected after the qualifying process.
On Tuesday, June 24, the qualifying period for candidates seeking mayoral or Alabaster City Council positions came to a conclusion, allowing them to complete the required paperwork and guarantee a place on the ballot.
Two candidates will be on the ballot for the mayor’s office: resident Yoko Brown is running against incumbent Scott Brakefield, who is seeking reelection to a second term.
The Alabaster City Council representative for Ward 1 will be a hotly fought post following the announcement by incumbent Sophie Martin that she will not run for reelection. The candidates on the ballot are Alabaster Downtown Redevelopment Authority Chairman Mike Myers, Alabaster Government Academy graduate Angel Evans, and preacher and business owner Gerry J. Bivins.
After being appointed to the position in 2022 to succeed Seth Gandy following his resignation, Zach Zahariadis, a member of the Alabaster City Council, is running for reelection as the representative for Ward 6. On the ballot, Zahariadis will compete against Jamia Alexander James, a former member of the Alabaster Board of Education.
The following incumbents will be proclaimed elected to their respective seats on the Alabaster City Council at the next meeting on Monday, July 14, following the conclusion that no other contenders are qualified for positions:
- Ward 2 Councilperson Rick Ellis
- Ward 3 Councilperson Stacy Rakestraw
- Ward 4 Councilperson Greg Farrell
- Ward 5 Councilperson Jamie Cole
- Ward 7 Councilperson Kerri Pate
The Alabaster Municipal Election is scheduled for August 26. Alabaster residents will cast their ballots at the former Restore building off of Highway 119 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
On the first Monday in November after the election, the newly elected Municipal Election candidates will assume office, and on Monday, November 3, the new council will hold its first organizational meeting.
