The 71-year-old driver who struck and killed 10-year-old ShaoLan “Lana” Kamaly in Florida in May 2024 is being sued by her father.
Near the end of the school year, the fourth-grader at Sugar Mill Elementary School was killed after she was hit by an SUV in a crossing near the campus, according to Port Orange Police.
According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal at the time, Pamela Schulz, the SUV’s driver, was given a traffic violation by Port Orange Police in January 2025 for “failing to exercise due care toward a pedestrian in a crosswalk.” She “had not been operating her vehicle in a wanton or reckless manner,” according to the police. It was found that speed had no role in this collision.
According to sources, Schulz ultimately entered a plea of no contest and was fined but not otherwise prosecuted.
According to sources, on February 24, ShaoLan’s father, Keivan Kamaly, filed a lawsuit against Schulz and Douglas Ente, the owner of the car that was involved in the collision. He claimed that when Schulz struck Kamaly, she was careless in failing to stop at a stop sign and maintain a proper lookout.
Schultz “negligently failed to stop at the stop sign, resulting in a fatal impact with [ShaoLan] while [ShaoLan] was in the crosswalk,” according to the lawsuit. According to ShaoLan’s father, Schulz “negligently failed to keep a proper lookout,” which led to ShaoLan being struck.
In addition to the costs of medical care and burial, Kamaly is suing for additional “damages permitted by the Florida Wrongful Death Act.”
“In her magnificent short life, Lana brought immeasurable joy and light into the world with her contagious smile, sincere compliments and endless curiosity,” an obituary for Kamaly said. “Lana spent most of her childhood reading, writing, composing, acting and at happy times swirling in her favorite dress.”
