Florida drivers face jail time for speeding over 100 mph under new law under new law

A new rule signed by Governor Ron DeSantis on Thursday could result in jail time for drivers who put others in danger by traveling 100 mph or more on Florida roads.

As soon as the new regulation goes into effect on July 1, drivers who go over the speed limit by fifty miles per hour could also be arrested.

Those found guilty of operating a motor vehicle 50 mph or more over the posted speed limit or 100 mph or more “in a manner that threatens the safety of other persons or property or interferes with the operation of any vehicle” may face up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine for a first offense under the “Dangerous Excessive Speeding Act.”

For dangerous excessive speeding, a subsequent conviction carries a $1,000 fine and a maximum jail sentence of 90 days.

If there are several offenses within five years, driving privileges may be suspended for up to a year.

Residents of southern Lake County have complained to law enforcement about the presence of speeders and other careless drivers on Bay Lake Road and other roads close to Groveland.
