The first movie of the Happy Death Day franchise was released in 2017 helmed by director Christopher Landon and penned by Scott Lobdell. It features Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard. Produced by Jason Blum under his Blumhouse Productions banner, in collaboration with Vesuvius Productions and Digital Riot Media. 

The story revolves around a university student who is killed on her birthday and starts to relive the day continually, she then decided to find who killed her and stop her from dying. 

The film was initially titled “Half to Death” and was launched on October 13, 2017, distributed by Universal Pictures. It was a box office hit and collected a whopping $125 million against a budget of just $4 million and earned generally favorable responses. The audience and critics alike deemed the horror flick as entertaining and applauded the immaculate performance of Jessica Rothe. Following the immense success of the first movie, the franchise announced a sequel titled “Happy Death 2U” which premiered on February 13, 2019. It obtained generally favorable responses from the audience and critics as well as the movie’s divert to more of a sci-fi approach. It collected $64 million at the box office against a budget of $9 million.

Is The Third Film In Development?

It’s been reported that a third film titled “Happy Death Day to Us,” is in development.

Nevertheless, Producer Jason Blum ascertained that Happy Death Day 3 is in fact still in development stages and hints that “something is stirring” heeding the upcoming horror threequel.

Currently, no official release date has been provided by the filmmakers but we expect the third movie to arrive sometime in 2023 at the earliest.

What Would Be The Plot For Happy Death 3?

Plot details are kept secret but the upcoming threequel will likely pick up the story from where the second film left off. In the last movie, we saw that Tree finally gained consciousness from her comatose state following the death of Carter only to discover that they never got to kill him after all the struggles. She must return to STEM with everyone else who passed overnight in order to find out how he survived.

Director Christopher Landon via EW revealed that he is keen to do another movie but his focus was more on the television series adaptation of Happy Death Day.

However, the future seems certain for fans who are clamoring for a third movie.
